The Fool
The King’s Fool always made the King laugh. That was the Fool’s job after all. It was all he needed to do to put food on his plate and keep a roof over his head. Sometimes he’d get beat around the head but that was the worst he had to endure being so close to the most powerful man in the country. Apart from the King’s random bouts of violence, the Fool was untouchable. Nobody could kill him unless they discovered the danger he posed to the royal family lineage.
The Princess was of the age where suitors from across the world fought each other in order to win her attention. Princes, Kings and aspirational Knights boasted feats of strength and exposure of their competition’s weakness but the Princess, being cut from the same royal cloth as her father, liked to laugh. The only man in the court that could make her laugh was the Fool.
The Queen knew of her daughter’s love for the Fool. It was one of the few reasons the Queen had to smile. Her young princess had never shown interest in any of the men of great stature who entered the royal court, so The Queen was happy that her daughter, despite being cut from the same royal cloth as the King, was capable of love. For the Queen, her daughter’s happiness was her happiness. And that was enough for the royal lineage.
